ROUGH GUIDE

Rough Guide

For the collaborative project  we were sent to explore Covent garden, china town and Soho looking for object or themes which we found interesting and that depicted the area best.

Within Covent garden I found the hustle and bustle of the busy market and the hive of people which occupied the area most interesting. These people ranged from tourists to workers who were all connected by the place in their own way.

When entering china town I was immediately struck by the colours which seemed to seep from every wall and food which hung from restaurant windows. the people where very camera shy and didn't want to make any statements about themselves or the area which they lived and worked. The food there was very bright and eye catching and as a result was the object which i focused on mainly.

"At  night Soho comes alive, the neon lights cone on and the party starts."
asking around the area i was told that the best way to catch Soho was at night. As a result i wandered around until i came across  a club which was filled with a diverse mixture of people. The environment was very staged and fanciful, created and unrealistic. This idea lead me to believe that that was what the people which came here searching for this fantasy away from the realities if the area and buy into the image which the area has so often be portrayed.

at the performance the belly dancer swirled and turned and created the most beautiful patterns with his clothes. the shapes and patterns where illuminated by the lights and enhanced the person and his performance.

the projrect encouraged me to look at things in a new way rather than takinging it for the street which i walk down i looked , listened and tasted the area this allowed me to study the area more intimately.

                                                                                    Study task

For the rough guide study task i selected a an empty glass bottle which was found in an alley way in Soho. The first things that came in to my mind was care free, common, popular , used and degraded.

  1. found object
  2. found artwork
"A ship in a bottle is an object of wonder. How can such towering masts and billowing sails fit inside such a commonplace object?"
"With Nelson's Ship in a Bottle I want to take this childhood sense of wonder and amplify it to match the monumental scale of Trafalgar Square."
With this image of nelsons ship in a bottle i look up at its magnificence which reflects the place which it can be found. looking down at the used bottle on the floor and the cigaret but in it reflects the place in which it was found, i think that in itself is a monument of place which it is found.
another way which this could be looked at is the idea of capturing the moment incapsulating the voyage. The bottle captures the moment of the night before.
